Internet of cooling and heating things
The increasing use of renewable energy will bring a new scenario based on continuous variations of both availability and cost of electricity. The development of Internet of Things (IoT) on HVAC/R industry will play a very important role at the time of optimizing the resources and ensure the comfort of the consumer. Whereas current control and monitoring systems describe the past and current situation of one single appliance (descriptive analytics), the connection of different devices could result in the automation of the actions through the prediction of what can happen in the future (proactive analytics). However, there are still lot of questions that HVAC/R stakeholders are wondering: Will IoT benefit HVAC/R industry? How will be the impact on consumers? Will we able to overcome security and privacy challenges? Is industry ready for all the changes IoT would involve? When will we see proactive analytics in all the applications?
The objective of this presentation is to give an overview of the last developments towards the automation of HVAC/R systems, with some case studies, and a reflection about when and how far IoT will dominate our cooling and heating systems.

Sergio Maria Capanelli has been at CAREL since 2008, and in the HVAC OEM Business Unit since 2015. During his career in Marketing he has contributed to exploring and promoting new HVAC technologies and developing high-efficiency solutions, above all in the field of heat pumps and residential applications, favouring a system-based approach. Before joining Marketing, he covered roles in software and solution design for the control of HVAC systems, working in close contact with the market’s leading players. He graduated in Information Technology Engineering from the University of Padova in 2007.
