Control intelligence for high-density data centre cooling

High Performance Computing is increasing thermal power density inside data centres, making liquid cooling essential for removing heat from the most demanding IT environments.

CAREL provides high-performance control solutions for liquid cooling systems, including immersion and direct-to-chip architectures. Air cooling also remains necessary, both to complement direct-to-chip systems and to support traditional servers with air-cooled heat sinks. This makes flexible and scalable data centre cooling solutions essential.

The CDU at the heart of liquid cooling

The Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) transfers the heat extracted from chips by a liquid — typically water and propylene glycol — or by a two-phase fluid to the Facility Water System (FWS). The FWS then rejects heat through a chiller or dry cooler, depending on ambient conditions.

CAREL supports different CDU configurations with c.pCO controllers, from compact in-rack units with c.pCO mini to larger floor-mounted systems with dual Ethernet ports and flying master logic. 

 

Control, sensors and software for mission-critical units

STone, CAREL’s high-performance programming environment, provides one development tool for data centre cooling applications, enabling fast, secure and reliable customisation for mission-critical units.

Liquid cooling systems require accurate monitoring of fluid conditions, often with redundant sensors for temperature, pressure and other parameters.

The new pCOe A-IN expansion board adds up to 16 analogue inputs, extending CAREL control architectures where a growing number of signals need to be managed. 

Edge connectivity and system efficiency

Liquid cooling often requires close interaction with servers and Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms.

CAREL boss one provides an edge device designed to communicate using standards such as Redfish and MQTT, while boss one DIN offers a stand-alone interface for different devices.
